Golfer Tom Watson Defies Age

It takes a rare sort of athlete to transcend a sport and become more than a mere footnoot or trivia question along the lines of: “What golfer was dubbed Huckleberry Dillinger early in his career?”

Tom Watson, the answer to the aforementioned query, is one such athlete. He’s amassed 39 PGA Tour wins (including two Masters, a U.S. Open, and a remarkable five British Opens), been a PGA Player of the Year six times, won five Champions Tour Major Championships, been a five-time leading money winner, and is only the second player in history, after Sam Snead, to post a top 20 finish in five different decades

You hear his voice most weeknights calmly reporting events or describing issues in the day’s news. Perhaps you watched him moderate the presidential debates. Maybe you’re among those who have been listening to him from the very earliest days in 1975 when he joined PBS’s The Robert MacNeil Report as the Washington correspondent, or the following year as the program expanded, renamed The MacNeil-Lehrer Report and went national. In 1983 it became the MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, eventually changing its name once more during 1995-96 season when Robert MacNeil retired. Since then that calm visage and voice are seen and heard on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer televised by PBS stations everywhere. Today Jim’s official title is Executive Editor and Anchor.

She sings. She dances. Of course, she’s an accomplished actress and performer, truly an all-around entertainer. But Florence Henderson also skypes, and e-mails messages and photographs to family and friends, and surfs the net. Florence is very much a testament to the wisdom of remaining engaged and active—mentally and physically—for she too is “one of us”.

For Tommy Lee Jones, his induction into the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame in January 2009 was huge. “This might be the first time that I’ve taken an award personally,” Jones remarked to those assembled at the induction ceremony.

Volumes have been written about him—and he’s written volumes himself—27 at last count with his 28th, Embrace the Struggle, just released in October. Along the way he’s helped so many others clarify their thinking about themselves, in matters related to both business and personal life.

“There’s only one place, first place,” say Al and Bobby Unser, two brothers who are just as incredible off the racetrack as their legendary days on it.

Although each rode and mastered quite different types of steeds, it can truly be said that the lives of brothers Darrell and Buster Welch have—and continue to be—undeniably the stuff of legend.
