Grant Money is Now Available for Seniors for Home Repairs

By: Alison Baity, Holladay Brothers Construction

Holladay Brothers Construction, Inc (HBC Inc) has been awarded a grant under the Older Americans Act (OAA) and the State of Colorado, through the Pikes Peak Area Agency on Aging (PPAAA) to help seniors with home repairs.

What is the Grant for?

The Grant is intended to help seniors maintain safety and independence while aging in place. This means Holladay Brothers Construction, Inc. will make repairs and minor modifications to help prevent falls and injuries, increase safety and increase quality of life. The grant money is used to install grab bars, widen doorways, build ramps, install smoke alarms and adequate lighting, install ADA accessible toilets, install handrails, fix minor plumbing and electrical problems, and anything else that will help a senior remain safe at home longer.

Who is eligible?

All seniors age 60 and over are eligible. HBC Inc must operate under a first-come first-served basis and help those most in need while the funds last. Seniors who are disabled, minority, low-income or live in rural areas have priority; however anyone 60 or over is eligible. As of August 28, 2009, there is no waiting list.

What is covered?

Repairs to a senior’s home may be covered in part or in full, depending on the scope and cost of repairs. Grant money covers approximately $350.00 towards aging in place repairs; however, additional monies may be supplemented depending on a person’s needs as assessed by HBC Inc staff. Grant money is intended for safety and aging in place repairs. However, additional modifications may be covered at a senior’s expense if requested.

Donations are encouraged under the OAA in order to extend funding to additional seniors in need. People are encouraged to donate as much or as little as they choose. The Pikes Peak Area Agency on Aging accepts donations from anyone for this important program. No one is denied services based on an inability to pay.
